Phillies Spring Training (Part 14) Phillies Walk-Off Over Orioles

8 Mar

The Phillies came from behind with a walk-off single in the 9th inning to beat the Orioles 4-3. Cole Hamels got the start going 4.0 IP allowing 1 hit and 2 earned runs, along with 2 K’s and 2 walks. He started the game off slow with a couple walks and a double, but later turned it around had a nice outing. Ryan Howard hit his 3rd HR of the Spring going 1 for 2 with a RBI. Carlos Rivero won the game in the 9th on a walk-off single. Both Delwyn Young and John Mayberry Jr. also recorded a hit a piece.

RBI’s – RBI: Howard (5), Victorino (1), Rivero 2 (2).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Shane Victorino– Victorino went 2 for 3 this game with a double and a RBI. Hitting out of the lead-off spot in the lineup today. He is now hitting .333 AVG this Spring.

Least Valuable Player – Placido Polanco– He went 0 for 3 with 2 runners left on base. So far he is only batting .208 AVG in the Spring and with Utley not playing right now the Phillies need more production out of him in the lineup.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Danys Baez & Drew Carpenter– These 2 Right-Handed Relievers both pitched perfect innings in the late part of the game to keep it close. They also combined for 3 K’s (Baez 2, Carpenter 1). These are the types of outings that help pitchers make the roster.

Least Valuable Pitcher – Brad Lidge– Pitching in his 1.0 IP he again managed to let up a run. As a closer, especially in close games, you expect them to shut them down. He started the inning with a HBP then later allowed a double to let the run score.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – I like how Danys Baez and Drew Carpenter worked out of the bullpen today. With the loss of Chad Durbin there is a need for another righty out of the pen. On offense Carlos Rivero went 2 for 2 with the game-winning single in the 9th inning.
