Phillies Spring Training (Part 15) Phillies Beat the Tigers

9 Mar

The Phillies won their Grapefruit League game today 5-3 over the Tigers behind a strong 4 run second inning. Joe Blanton took the hill today despite rumors he could be traded the Texas Rangers. His final line was 5.0 IP allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, along with 3 K’s and 2 walks. Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero also pitched for a combined 2.0 IP allowing no runs. On Offense most of the runs came from Brian Schneider who hit a 3-Run HR in the 2nd inning. Also having a good day was Raul Ibanez who went 2 for 3 with a run scored. Chase Utley is going to be seeking more opinions, but it does not look like good news will be coming out of this story.

RBI’s – RBI: Gload (2), Schneider 3 (4), Larish (3).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Raul Ibanez– Ibanez went 2 for 3 today with a run scored. He raised his Spring Batting Average to .240 AVG. Multiple hit games especially in Spring Training are always a sign of a good game.

Least Valuable Player – None– Every Phillies starter got at least a hit or reached base through a walk. Nobody really had a glaring bad day, which as a fan is a nice thing to see.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Ryan Madson– I tweeted the other day that i would like to see Madson get a chance at being a closer full-time. Brad Lidge is really inconsistent, which is not a good thing for a closer to be. Both could be Free Agents at the end of the year and I feel Madson has more upside of the two.

Least Valuable Pitcher – Mike Zagurski– he pitched 1.0 IP allowing a run on 2 hits. As a lefty in competition for a roster spot giving up runs, especially late in the game never looks good on the stat sheet.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – David Herndon pitched a scoreless inning only allowing 1 hit. That is a good sign for him as he competes to make the final roster. On offense Delwyn Young continues to accumulate hits going 1 for 3 today and hitting .321 AVG for the spring.
