Phillies Spring Training (Part 14) Phillies Walk-Off Over Orioles

8 Mar

The Phillies came from behind with a walk-off single in the 9th inning to beat the Orioles 4-3. Cole Hamels got the start going 4.0 IP allowing 1 hit and 2 earned runs, along with 2 K’s and 2 walks. He started the game off slow with a couple walks and a double, but later turned it around had a nice outing. Ryan Howard hit his 3rd HR of the Spring going 1 for 2 with a RBI. Carlos Rivero won the game in the 9th on a walk-off single. Both Delwyn Young and John Mayberry Jr. also recorded a hit a piece.

RBI’s – RBI: Howard (5), Victorino (1), Rivero 2 (2).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Shane Victorino– Victorino went 2 for 3 this game with a double and a RBI. Hitting out of the lead-off spot in the lineup today. He is now hitting .333 AVG this Spring.

Least Valuable Player – Placido Polanco– He went 0 for 3 with 2 runners left on base. So far he is only batting .208 AVG in the Spring and with Utley not playing right now the Phillies need more production out of him in the lineup.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Danys Baez & Drew Carpenter– These 2 Right-Handed Relievers both pitched perfect innings in the late part of the game to keep it close. They also combined for 3 K’s (Baez 2, Carpenter 1). These are the types of outings that help pitchers make the roster.

Least Valuable Pitcher – Brad Lidge– Pitching in his 1.0 IP he again managed to let up a run. As a closer, especially in close games, you expect them to shut them down. He started the inning with a HBP then later allowed a double to let the run score.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – I like how Danys Baez and Drew Carpenter worked out of the bullpen today. With the loss of Chad Durbin there is a need for another righty out of the pen. On offense Carlos Rivero went 2 for 2 with the game-winning single in the 9th inning.

Phillies Spring Training (Part 8) Phillies Fall to Orioles

2 Mar

The Phillies rallied in the 9th, but fall short to the Orioles 6-5 moving them to 2-3 in Grapefruit League Play. The rally was started on back-to-back HR’s by Michael Martinez and John Mayberry Jr. For the Phillies pitchers it was not their day allowing 6 runs on 16 hits. Roy Oswalt had a decent day with a line of 2.0 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run, a walk & a strike out. Ryan Howard started off the scoring with a RBI double in the 1st inning. Also Carlos Ruiz has been away from camp to be with his family for the birth of his second son. He will be back in Spring Training by the weekend.

RBI’s – RBI: Howard (1), Young, De (1), Martinez, M (1), Mayberry (1).

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – John Mayberry Jr.– He went 2 for 4 with a HR and 1 RBI, if he could produce some consistent power off the bench it may win him a spot on the roster.

Least Valuable Player – Jimmy Rollins– I need a new LVP because Charlie gave Domonic Brown the day off today. Rollins went 0 for 3 with a K. Not good stats from a lead-off batter.

Most Valuable Pitcher – David Herndon– He pitched 1.0 innings letting up only 1 hit and had a K. I put only because he is the one of only 2 pitchers to let up less than 2 hits in this game. Not a good day for the Phillies pitchers.

Least Valuable Pitcher Brad Lidge– He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 earned run. As a closer he needs to cut down on the base runners, especially when the regular season comes around.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – The player who helped his roster chances the most was Delwyn Young once again. He is really making the most of his opportunity to win a bench spot. He went 1 for 1 today off the bench with an RBI. He is batting .500 so far this Spring and I give him the inside track on making the roster so far. Pitcher David Herndon pitched a scoreless inning only allowing 1 hit and had a K. This is a good outing out of a person who really needs to prove his worth, especially without the safety of being a Rule 5 pick anymore.
