Phillies Spring Training (Part 13) Phillies lose to Yankees

7 Mar

The Phillies lose to the Yankees 7-1 on Monday. The offense did not really show up for the game, with the only run coming off a Wilson Valdez HR. The only other starters with hits were Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins (both with singles). Roy Oswalt did not have his greatest appearance, but that is allowed when it is only Spring Training. Vance Worley also did not pitch well letting up 5 hits in 2.0 IP. The Phillies take on the Orioles tomorrow in Grapefruit League action.

RBI’s – RBI: Valdez, W (1).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Wilson Valdez– Valdez went 1 for 2 with a rare HR. He accounted for the Phillies only run of the game and is now hitting .529 AVG in the Spring. It was not the Phillies strongest game offensively recording only 5 hits.

Least Valuable Player – Ryan Howard– He went 0 for 3 with 2 K’s. We all know he can’t always have good games. In these games where the offense is off strike outs really stand out.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Drew Naylor– Naylor a young pitcher from Australia pitched 1.1 IP allowing 1 hit with 3 K’s and a walk. In a game where the team allowed 7 runs this is a very good line for a pitcher.

Least Valuable Pitcher – Roy Oswalt– He pitched 2.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 5 runs, 3 earned, 3 K’s. His downfall was that he allowed the Yankees to hit 2 HR’s off of him in the short time he was in the game.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – Nobody really helped there chances of making the roster and also nobody really hurt their chances either. Since the Phillies did not get many hits and the starters played untill they reached 3 at-bats there were no real chances for back-ups to show their stuff.
