Phillies Spring Training (Part 13) Phillies lose to Yankees

7 Mar

The Phillies lose to the Yankees 7-1 on Monday. The offense did not really show up for the game, with the only run coming off a Wilson Valdez HR. The only other starters with hits were Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins (both with singles). Roy Oswalt did not have his greatest appearance, but that is allowed when it is only Spring Training. Vance Worley also did not pitch well letting up 5 hits in 2.0 IP. The Phillies take on the Orioles tomorrow in Grapefruit League action.

RBI’s – RBI: Valdez, W (1).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Wilson Valdez– Valdez went 1 for 2 with a rare HR. He accounted for the Phillies only run of the game and is now hitting .529 AVG in the Spring. It was not the Phillies strongest game offensively recording only 5 hits.

Least Valuable Player – Ryan Howard– He went 0 for 3 with 2 K’s. We all know he can’t always have good games. In these games where the offense is off strike outs really stand out.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Drew Naylor– Naylor a young pitcher from Australia pitched 1.1 IP allowing 1 hit with 3 K’s and a walk. In a game where the team allowed 7 runs this is a very good line for a pitcher.

Least Valuable Pitcher – Roy Oswalt– He pitched 2.2 innings allowing 4 hits and 5 runs, 3 earned, 3 K’s. His downfall was that he allowed the Yankees to hit 2 HR’s off of him in the short time he was in the game.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – Nobody really helped there chances of making the roster and also nobody really hurt their chances either. Since the Phillies did not get many hits and the starters played untill they reached 3 at-bats there were no real chances for back-ups to show their stuff.

Phillies Spring Training (Part 5) Phillies Vs. Yankees part 2

27 Feb

The Phillies took their first lost of Spring Training today losing 7-3 to the Yankees in Clearwater, FL. Ben Francisco shined in the loss by going 2 for 4 with all 3 RBI’s in the game. Joe Blanton got the start and went a solid 3 innings not letting up any runs. Other regulars getting their first playing time of the Spring were Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Madson, J.C Romero, and Brad Lidge.

RBI’s – RBI: Francisco, B 3 (3).

Most Valuable Player – Ben Francisco– For the second straight day he gets the MVP. He went 2 for 4 with a double, HR, and 3 RBI’s.

Least Valuable Player – Domonic Brown– He went 0 for 3 with 3 strikeouts and 1 man left on base. This is not a good showing, especially in trying to prove you should be the everyday starter

Most Valuable Pitcher – Joe Blanton– Pitched 3.0 inning with no hits allowed. Finished with 1 strikeout and a walk.

Least Valuable Pitcher- Brad Lidge– He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 1 hit, that being a HR and 1 earned runs. He can not divert back to last year and allow HR’s out of the bullpen if he wants to remain closer all season.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – The player who helped his chances the most is Delwyn Young who once again came off the bench with a hit and a run scored. The player who hurt his chances was Domonic Brown. You can not prove you are a starter by going 0 for 3 with 3 K’s, unacceptable. Also of note Danys Baez did not perform well in B game yesterday, which is not a good sign for him.

Most Valuable Player – Ben Francisco– He went 1 for 1 with a triple and a run scored. He also had a stolen base in his brief time in the game

Least Valuable Player – Raul Ibanez– He went 0 for 2 with a strikeout and 1 man left on base. It is early in Spring Training but today was not his greatest statistical game.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Cole Hamels– Pitched 2.0 inning only letting up 1 hit. He did allow one run, but it was unearned. Finished with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

Least Valuable Pitcher- Brian Schlitter– He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs. He had 1 walk and let up the games only HR. But still got the win, so not all bad.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – In today’s game Mike Zagurski helped his chances in an inning pitched he allowed 1 hit and struck out one. The player who hurt himself the most was Delwyn Young going 0 for 2 leaving 2 players on base. It was only one game but he needs to show a consistent effort all throughout Spring Training.
