Phillies Spring Training (Part 11) Halladay Shines in Loss

5 Mar

The Phillies take the loss today to the Pirates 4-3. There were a lot of positives that came out of todays game starting with Roy Halladay pitching 3.0 IP allowing 1 hit, with 4 K’s and 2 walks. A pretty solid Spring Training line for Halladay. On offense both Ben Francisco and Delwyn Young had big games going 5 for 6 combined with 2 RBI’s. Another positive was the appearance of the back-end of the bullpen. Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, and Jose Contreras shut down the Pirates in the last 3 innings in hope of a Phillies comeback. The Phillies play their 1st split-squad game tomorrow look for multiple blogs…

RBI’s – RBI: Francisco, B (6), Young, De (2), Martinez, M (2).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Delwyn Young– Young went 3 for 3 filling in at 2B for the injured Chase Utley. He also recorded a RBI and run scored in the game. He has everything needed for an Opening Day roster spot on the bench. He can play both OF and 2B, which is especially important with the uncertainty of Utley right now.

Least Valuable Player – Jimmy Rollins– He went 0 for 3 with 2 runners left on base. He needs to show more consistency in the Spring so that it will transfer over to the regular season. Everyone expects him to be better than his poor showing last year (somewhat due to injuries).

Most Valuable Pitcher – Back-End of Bullpen– Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, and Jose Contreras all pitched in today’s game. They combined for 3.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk and 2 K’s. They shut down the game at the end, which is what will be expected of those 3 come the regular season.

Least Valuable Pitcher – J.C Ramirez– He pitched 3.0 innings allowing 5 hits and 4 earned runs, and a K. Just a tough day allowing too many hits and runs. Keep in mind he is still a young pitcher.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – Domonic Brown finally got his first hit of the Spring today and finished off 1 for 1 in the game. Hopefully this will settle him down and gets him on a little roll this week. He has the ability to make this roster and even be the starting RF, but with the camp Ben Francisco is having it will be tough to win that spot. Francisco went 2 for 3 today with an RBI.

Phillies Spring Training (Part 10) Phillies Over Pirates

4 Mar

The Phillies took on the Pirates today and came out with the 7-4 win. Ryan Howard hit his 1st HR of the spring along with going 2 for 3. Other regulars with multiple hits were Jimmy Rollins going 2 for 3 and Wilson Valdez going 3 for 4. Joe Blanton got the start and had a decent outing. His final line was 3.2 IP allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, 2 K’s and a walk. Drew Carpenter worked his first inning out of relief since his switch from being a starter. He pitched himself into a bases loaded jam, but eventually got out of the inning without any damage. Good sign of nerves from him out of the bullpen.

RBI’s – RBI: Ibanez (1), Howard 2 (3), Rizzotti (1), Orr (2), Sardinha, D (3), Galvis (1).

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Ryan Howard & Wilson Valdez– Howard went 2 for 3 with a run scored and 2 RBI’s. He also hit his 1st HR of the Spring, which is always a good site to see. Wilson Valdez went 3 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and a run scored. This is what you like to see out of a bench utility player, especially with Chase Utley injured right now.

Least Valuable Player – Michael Martinez– After going 0 for 4 yesterday he went 0 for 4 today as well. He now has a .063 AVG. I do not see him making this roster, he offers nothing that we can’t get out of a Delwyn Young or Wilson Valdez.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Danys Baez– He pitched 1.1 innings letting up 1 hit. This is a good sign specially because he pitched fairly early in the game against real competition. He is a veteran and if he can get back to where he was prior to coming to the Phillies it can be nothing but good for the bullpen. Remember Chad Durbin’s spot in the bullpen needs to be replaced.

Least Valuable Pitcher – Dan Meyer – He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 earned run’s 2 K’s and a walk. He is a lefty who needs to prove his worth to make it into the bullpen for the Phillies on Opening Day.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – Not necessarily making the roster but proving he may be Ryan Howard’s replacement sometime down the line is what Mike Rizzotti did today. He went 1 for 1 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. He is similar in stature to Howard standing at 6-5, 235 pounds. Also Antonio Bastardo pitched the 9th inning today and held the Pirates hitless along with posting 2 K’s. A great sign from the hard throwing lefty.
