Phillies Spring Training (Part 11) Halladay Shines in Loss

5 Mar

The Phillies take the loss today to the Pirates 4-3. There were a lot of positives that came out of todays game starting with Roy Halladay pitching 3.0 IP allowing 1 hit, with 4 K’s and 2 walks. A pretty solid Spring Training line for Halladay. On offense both Ben Francisco and Delwyn Young had big games going 5 for 6 combined with 2 RBI’s. Another positive was the appearance of the back-end of the bullpen. Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, and Jose Contreras shut down the Pirates in the last 3 innings in hope of a Phillies comeback. The Phillies play their 1st split-squad game tomorrow look for multiple blogs…

RBI’s – RBI: Francisco, B (6), Young, De (2), Martinez, M (2).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Delwyn Young– Young went 3 for 3 filling in at 2B for the injured Chase Utley. He also recorded a RBI and run scored in the game. He has everything needed for an Opening Day roster spot on the bench. He can play both OF and 2B, which is especially important with the uncertainty of Utley right now.

Least Valuable Player – Jimmy Rollins– He went 0 for 3 with 2 runners left on base. He needs to show more consistency in the Spring so that it will transfer over to the regular season. Everyone expects him to be better than his poor showing last year (somewhat due to injuries).

Most Valuable Pitcher – Back-End of Bullpen– Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, and Jose Contreras all pitched in today’s game. They combined for 3.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk and 2 K’s. They shut down the game at the end, which is what will be expected of those 3 come the regular season.

Least Valuable Pitcher – J.C Ramirez– He pitched 3.0 innings allowing 5 hits and 4 earned runs, and a K. Just a tough day allowing too many hits and runs. Keep in mind he is still a young pitcher.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – Domonic Brown finally got his first hit of the Spring today and finished off 1 for 1 in the game. Hopefully this will settle him down and gets him on a little roll this week. He has the ability to make this roster and even be the starting RF, but with the camp Ben Francisco is having it will be tough to win that spot. Francisco went 2 for 3 today with an RBI.

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Ben Francisco– He went 1 for 1 with a triple and a run scored. He also had a stolen base in his brief time in the game

Least Valuable Player – Raul Ibanez– He went 0 for 2 with a strikeout and 1 man left on base. It is early in Spring Training but today was not his greatest statistical game.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Cole Hamels– Pitched 2.0 inning only letting up 1 hit. He did allow one run, but it was unearned. Finished with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

Least Valuable Pitcher- Brian Schlitter– He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs. He had 1 walk and let up the games only HR. But still got the win, so not all bad.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – In today’s game Mike Zagurski helped his chances in an inning pitched he allowed 1 hit and struck out one. The player who hurt himself the most was Delwyn Young going 0 for 2 leaving 2 players on base. It was only one game but he needs to show a consistent effort all throughout Spring Training.
