Phillies Spring Training (Part 6) Phillies Over Blue Jays

28 Feb

The Phillies took the win today 6-3 over the Toronto Blue Jays in Dunedin, FL. Roy Halladay got in his first work of the spring and pitched 2.0 innings letting up 2 hits, with 1 strikeout and a walk. He allowed no runs. Most of the regulars in this game got about 3 at-bats and then were replaced for the backups. Domonic Brown got the start in RF and showed signs that he may not be ready for the big club yet, going 0 for 4 with 2 K’s (that makes 6 K’S and 0 hits in Spring). Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz both had 2 RBI’s to help Phillies to the early lead

RBI’s – RBI: Ruiz 2 (2), Polanco 2 (2), Francisco, B (4).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Placido Polanco– He went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored. This is something we hope to see all year-long from Polly.

Least Valuable Player – Domonic Brown– Second straight day as LVP. He went 0 for 4 with 2 strikeouts and 2 men left on base. He is yet to record a hit this Spring and needs to turn it around quickly to prove he can help this team Opening Day.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Roy Halladay & J.C Ramirez– It is nice to see Halladay record a 2.0 inning shutout with a strikeout, but J.C Ramirez also pitched 2.0 innings allowing 1 hit and 4 K’s and he is only 22 years old facing some Blue jay starters.

Least Valuable Pitcher- Scott Mathieson– He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs against the Blue Jay’s back-ups

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – The player who helped his roster chances the most was Delwyn Young once again. He is really making the most of his opportunity to win a bench spot. He went 1 for 3 today but at least he is getting hits compared to the likes of Mayberry, M. Martinez, and Domonic Brown. Brown is really hurting his chance to make this club for Opening Day and could start out the season in AAA with Lehigh Valley. Pitching wise Scott Mathieson did not help his chance to make the roster out of the bullpen with a bad outing today.
