26 Feb

The Phillies opened up Grapefruit league play today with a 5-4 win over the Yankees. Dane Sardinha won the game in the top of the 8th inning on a bases-loaded 2 RBI Single. A total of 16 players played in this game as well as 6 pitchers. Cole Hamels got the start in the game going 2 inning letting up 1 run but none of them were earned. He struck out 2 batter and walked another. Regulars Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez got some at bats as well this game.

RBI’s – RBI: Orr (1), Gload (1), Sardinha, D 2 (2).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards handed out to players who are normally regulars. (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Ben Francisco– He went 1 for 1 with a triple and a run scored. He also had a stolen base in his brief time in the game

Least Valuable Player – Raul Ibanez– He went 0 for 2 with a strikeout and 1 man left on base. It is early in Spring Training but today was not his greatest statistical game.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Cole Hamels– Pitched 2.0 inning only letting up 1 hit. He did allow one run, but it was unearned. Finished with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

Least Valuable Pitcher- Brian Schlitter– He pitched 1.0 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs. He had 1 walk and let up the games only HR. But still got the win, so not all bad.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – In today’s game Mike Zagurski helped his chances in an inning pitched he allowed 1 hit and struck out one. The player who hurt himself the most was Delwyn Young going 0 for 2 leaving 2 players on base. It was only one game but he needs to show a consistent effort all throughout Spring Training.
