Phillies Spring Training (Part 2) Game 1 Vs. FSU

24 Feb

The Phillies opened up their Spring Training season with an 8-0 win over the Florida State Seminoles. Drew Naylor started this game and got the win by default since the Phillies opened the scoring in the 1st and none of the other pitchers let up a run. The Phils scored 4 runs in the 1st inning giving off the impression there was no messing around. Ryan Howard brought in the first 2 runs on a double. Most of the regulars started the game with the exception of Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley due to excused trip to White House and soreness respectively. A total of 21 players played in this game and 7 pitchers. No regular pitchers pitched in this game just younger guys trying to prove themselves.

RBI’s – RBI: Howard 2 (2), Ruiz (1), Orr (1), Galvis (1), Martinez, M (1), Schneider (1).

I will hand out awards for each Spring Training game based on mostly statistical categories. There will be 5 awards (Most Valuable Player, Least Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, Least Valuable Pitcher, Players Who Helped/Hurt Chances of Making the Team)

Awards for Game
Most Valuable Player – Ryan Howard – Went 1 for 2 with the game-winning double and 2 RBI’s, along with a run scored.

Least Valuable Player – Shane Victorino – Went 0 for 2 and was the only regular not to reach base during the game.

Most Valuable Pitcher – Justin De Fratus– Pitched 1.0 inning facing the minimum 3 batters and stuck out 2 of them.

Least Valuable Pitcher- None– No pitcher let up more than 1 hit in this game letting up 4 hits total it was a combined team shutout.

Players Who Helped/Hurt Chance at Roster Spot – For this award today I am going with John Mayberry Jr. and Delwyn Young both helping their chances by going 1 for 1 with a run scored off the bench which is a good sign as these 2 players will probably be competing against each other for the last spot on the bench as a backup OF.
